So where are the big whitetail bucks? Well, as soon as hunting season begins, the wise old bucks with the rocking chair racks head for safety. In many areas this means they seek the sanctuary of the deep woods. In other locations the big boys go into the swamps. The dense, deep swamps offer bucks the safety they look for after sensing pressure.
Swamp hunting for whitetail deer can be an tough task, even for the veteran hunter. But, as in any endeavor, the tough assignment can pay the biggest dividends.
There are two basic methods of swamp hunting for whitetails. The first is the stalking method. This can be done in muddy, low-lying swamps. The idea is to ease along the edges of the swamp, stopping frequently, listening patiently and being very aware of your surroundings. Since most swamp deer will be taken at close ranges, the bowhunters have an advantage. For the rifle hunters, most would choose a brush-busting caliber such as a 30.30 or 30.06. Scopes generally just get in the way in this type of terrain, so good open sights are the best choice.
The second method is the more traditional stand hunting style. Often hunters will use a canoe or shallow draft boat to take their stand to a small island with trees. They set up the stand so they have a good view of their surroundings. Anyone who chooses this method should be prepared to get in the stand early and stay late. Stand hunting in swamps is not for the faint of heart.
Since scent tends to travel well in the moist swamp environs, be sure to do everything possible to conceal your scent. Although much has been said and printed lately about activated charcoal, many hunters believe washing their camo in baking soda is still the best solution. A helpful tip when washing your camo: turn the apparel inside-out. The pigments wash outward, so this helps prevent fading.
A final note before heading for the swamps for that big buck. Insects and swamps go together like ham and eggs. Aromatic insect sprays will spook your game, so it’s best to go with good, thick camo clothing complete with a turkey hunting face net. Believe me, you’ll be glad you did.
