Is it legal to hunt whitetail with a 30 carbine round?
Is it comparable to a 357 magnum fired from a handgun at 100 yards?
In deference to William’s idea to hunt with a camera, I always try to remember to take a camera when I go hunting, to record the Safari for the Handgun Hunters International newsletter, but I usually forget! However, my binoculars are a combo camera type, and then I forget to push the button!
Anyway, the 30 Carbine is less powerful in terms of actual killing power than a 357, primarily because of the much smaller bullet. With scoped ordnance, both are good to 125 yards on broadside lung hits. But only with handgun iron sights? A whole lot less, as that front sight covers up a lot of deer, and many folks find that even slowly taken and well-rested shots get chancy at 75 yards for correct hit placement.
Legal, it widely varies. Contact the Game and Fish people where you will be hunting.
